2. Is your indoor beetle a native garden ladybug?
An indoor aggregation is much more likely to be multicolored Asian lady beetles than a group of native garden species. “Ladybug” and “lady beetle” are common names for the same beetle family, Coccinellidae, so neither word identifies a species. Spot counting alone also fails.

Penn State identifies adult Harmonia axyridis by a pale pronotum, the plate immediately behind the head, bearing a black W that often looks like an M when viewed from the front. Adults measure about 9/32 inch (7 mm). Their wing covers may be red with as many as 18 black spots, red with none, or black with two, four, or 12 reddish spots.
This non-native species gathers on buildings around early October in colder regions, then shelters behind siding, in attics, and in wall voids. University of Kentucky reports that its building flights are heaviest after cooler weather when sunny conditions return and the outdoor temperature reaches at least the mid-60s Fahrenheit. In Kentucky, the main migration usually occurs in October; Cornell places the broader fall house-invasion period from mid-October to early November.
A native comparison: convergent lady beetle
The convergent lady beetle (Hippodamia convergens), a common North American garden species, is 4–7 mm long. Cornell University’s biological-control guide describes two white lines that converge behind its head and red forewings carrying anywhere from a few black spots to the full set of 13. Adults live for weeks or months, depending on prey, season, and location.
Its winter behavior supplies the useful contrast. Western H. convergens can spend up to nine months, May through February, in large mountain-valley aggregations away from food. H. axyridis readily substitutes houses and other buildings for protected natural sites. Native lady beetles can wander indoors, among other exceptions, but a large fall cluster on windows or siding plus the black M/W mark strongly favors H. axyridis.
3. Will warmth and food keep an indoor ladybug alive?
Warmth can shorten the winter survival of a dormant Asian lady beetle by increasing activity and drawing down stored energy. Food can support an active beetle only when it is an appropriate diet in sufficient supply. A heated room with a raisin and a bottle-cap of water is therefore a poor model of either a summer feeding site or a cold overwintering crevice.
What the temperature numbers actually measure
Masahiko Watanabe’s 2002 European Journal of Entomology study followed adult H. axyridis collected in Tsukuba, Japan. Sixty adults swarming on November 10, 1997, were kept at an outdoor artificial overwintering site; more than 90% survived through the end of February. The site’s lowest recorded temperature was −3.5°C in early January.
Here is the conversion I would put beside any commodity figure: −3.5 × 9/5 + 32 = 25.7°F. Watanabe concluded that the optimum overwintering temperature in that experiment lay somewhere between 0 and −5°C (32 to 23°F). This is a physiological result for seasonally acclimated beetles, not an instruction to put a found beetle in a household freezer.
I once converted a commodity batch total twice and published a plausible error. It cost a correction in the next issue. That is why I keep the original Celsius values beside Fahrenheit here; writing “32 to 41°F” would reverse the sign and turn a cold-tolerance result into bad container-care advice.

Why “plenty of aphids” still needs a number
A 2020 BioControl field study by Alois Honěk, Zdenka Martinkova, and Stano Pekar sampled small-leaved linden stands weekly during the 2017–2019 growing seasons. H. axyridis began laying eggs after linden aphid density exceeded 10.2 aphids per ten sweeps, equivalent to 1.04 aphids per 100 cm² of leaf area. Until roughly 2021, I advised keeping a winter-found lady beetle in a ventilated container until spring. I no longer do. A container controls escape; it supplies neither a verified prey level nor the cold regime under which an overwintering adult conserves its reserves. Brief observation is one thing. Months of improvised captivity ask the insect to bridge two incomplete habitats.

Temperature and food abundance stretch the full egg-to-adult interval from three to six weeks. This makes the adult maximum a biological ceiling, not a promise attached to every red beetle. It also explains why an “alligator-like bug” on an aphid-covered stem may be an immature lady beetle with about two larval weeks to complete, rather than a garden pest to remove.
Species still changes the clock. Cornell reports 10–30 larval days and as little as two to three weeks from egg to adult for H. convergens, followed by an adult life measured in weeks or months. Substituting those figures for indoor H. axyridis would recreate the denominator error in a different costume.
How do you remove indoor lady beetles without crushing them?

- Confirm the adult. Look for the 7 mm oval body and pale pronotum with the black M/W mark; do not rely on the number of spots.
