Did God Create Dinosaurs? The Ideas People Habitually Run Together
When people ask whether God created dinosaurs, they usually fuse two different kinds of claim: a theological statement that God is creator, and an empirical statement about when non-avian dinosaurs lived. Fossils and published dates place the earliest dinosaurs in the Triassic, about 243–233 million years ago in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History Evolve or Perish guidebook, and they place the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary at 66.00 million years ago on the International Commission on Stratigraphy chart (December 2024 edition). The Smithsonian Human Origins Program dates Homo sapiens to about 300,000 years ago. Those figures test natural-history claims. They do not settle a doctrine of creation. Whether “God created dinosaurs” can sit beside that timeline depends on how a tradition reads Genesis. Treating the two as rival scientific hypotheses is the mix-up that makes the question feel like a forced choice.
I process fencing tournament check-in. A mask inspection mark and a body-cord test can both fail a bag, and they still answer different questions. I once sent a beginner to the strip before equipment control. The bout started. The cord failed. This search arrives the same way: two stamps requested as if they were one.
What two claims get packed into “did God create dinosaurs”?
The first claim is theological. In the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition, Genesis 1:1 opens, “When God began to create the heavens and the earth,” and Genesis 1:27 says God created humans “in his image.” That is a confession about who the world belongs to, and about imago Dei. It is argued from Scripture and a community’s doctrine of creation. Paleontology does not issue that confession, and it cannot revoke it.
The second claim is chronological. Non-avian dinosaurs are a clade in the fossil record. Their bones sit in layers ordered by stratigraphy and dated by radiometric clocks, often volcanic ash that brackets a bed. That work asks when those animals lived, how phylogeny relates them, and which extinction removed the non-avian forms. Natural selection and common descent describe how lineages diversify. They do not test whether God exists.
Search pages print both claims in adjacent sentences, as if a date could baptize a doctrine or a verse could retune a mass spectrometer.
What can fossils actually date?
Fossils record organisms in rock. Age comes from the rock sequence and from radioisotopes in minerals that formed at a known moment. Period boundaries on a time-scale chart are agreed correlation points; a named fossil can sit slightly off the round number on an education poster.
The Smithsonian guidebook used with the museum’s Deep Time fossil hall says the first dinosaurs evolved between 243 and 233 million years ago. That is a fossil-age range for origins, not the opening of the Triassic Period. The ICS International Chronostratigraphic Chart (v 2024/12) places the base of the Triassic (Induan Stage) at 251.902 ± 0.024 million years ago and the base of the Jurassic (Hettangian Stage) at 201.4 ± 0.2 million years ago. The 2026/06 ICS update revised some Permian and Triassic stage numbers; it left the Cretaceous–Paleogene line in place.
Non-avian dinosaurs then run through the Jurassic and Cretaceous. The Smithsonian education page “Extinction Over Time” dates the end-Cretaceous event to 66 million years ago. The ICS chart prints 66.00 million years for the base of the Danian, the first Paleogene stage, which is the same boundary. Most numerical ages on that chart are taken from Gradstein and colleagues’ Geologic Time Scale 2020, with later ICS subcommission adjustments. Time-scale values change by edition, so the edition has to be named.
A tighter radiometric figure for that named boundary comes from argon-argon work. Renne and colleagues reported in Science in 2013 a preferred age of 66.043 ± 0.043 million years for the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary, uncertainty including systematic error. That plus-minus is the clock’s stated precision, not a theological margin.
The same Smithsonian page frames five mass extinctions, matching the “Big Five” framework Raup and Sepkoski set out in Science in 1982 from marine family data. The museum’s list, oldest last: Late Ordovician (447 million years ago), Late Devonian (378), end Permian (252), Late Triassic (199), and end Cretaceous (66). The K–Pg event is one of those five. It removed non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and mosasaurs. Birds survived.
Where do humans sit on that timeline?
They sit late. The Smithsonian Human Origins Program’s Homo sapiens species page gives the range “About 300,000 years ago to present.” An 8 June 2017 note from the same program reports Jebel Irhoud fossils in Morocco as the oldest Homo sapiens yet found, “dating to about 300,000 years old,” after Hublin et al. in Nature.
Richter et al., Nature (2017), give a weighted average of 315 ± 34 thousand years for heated flint associated with the fossils, by thermoluminescence, and a supporting uranium-series/electron-spin-resonance age of 286 ± 32 thousand years on a tooth from the Irhoud 3 mandible. Those remain about 65.7 million years after the K–Pg boundary on the ICS chart.
“Dinosaurs and humans at the same time” appears in young-earth readings that put land animals and Adam on the same ordinary day. It does not appear in the fossil sequence that museums and commissions publish. A 300,000-year fossil says when a body plan shows up in rock. Genesis 1:26–27 in the NRSVUE is about image and dominion. I have not dated a zircon. I read the published uncertainties the way I read a spec sheet: they constrain the measurement, not the prayer.
How have Christians read Genesis 1 on this?
Young-earth writing often treats a six-day, few-thousand-year reading as the only “literal” Christian option. The history of interpretation is longer than that argument.
Genesis 1 in the NRSVUE runs in this order:
- Light; Day and Night (1:3–5)
- A dome called Sky (1:6–8)
- Dry land, Seas, vegetation (1:9–13)
- The two great lights and the stars (1:14–19)
- Sea creatures and birds (1:20–23)
- Land animals, then humans in the image of God (1:24–31)
- Rest (2:1–3)
The English word dinosaur is absent. It was coined in the nineteenth century. Putting dinosaurs in the Bible maps a modern clade onto “living creatures of every kind,” “wild animals,” or a poetic beast in Job. Mapping is interpretation.
Augustine, writing The Literal Meaning of Genesis in the early fifth century, already refused to treat the creation days as ordinary solar days. In book 4 he says those days are “not at all like” the days governed by the sun. In The City of God 11.6 he writes that what kind of days they were is “extremely difficult or perhaps impossible for us to conceive.” He also argued that God created all things simultaneously, with the six-day story as a teaching sequence. That is not modern old-earth geology. It shows that “literal” has never meant only “six recent 24-hour days.”
Later readers stretched the days into ages, or inserted a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 so a ruined earlier world could hold deep time (the gap reading still searched as “Genesis gap theory dinosaurs”). Many theistic evolutionists read the chapter as a liturgical or functional account of God ordering a world, not as a field notebook of hours.
Job 40:15–24 in the same NRSVUE translation opens, “Look at Behemoth, which I made just as I made you; it eats grass like an ox,” and says “it makes its tail stiff like a cedar.” Commentators have offered a hippopotamus, an elephant, a chaos-beast paired with Leviathan, and, in some young-earth books, a sauropod. Similarity of scale is not a taxonomic ID. The passage is poetry. It does not date a formation.
How do theistic evolution and young-earth creationism differ?
The public fight is about whether dinosaurs and humans share a calendar.
Answers in Genesis states the land-animal claim in plain words: God made land animals, including dinosaurs, on Day Six (Genesis 1:24–25), “so they date from around 6,000 years ago,” and humans lived with them. Fossils are often assigned to Noah’s Flood. Behemoth is sometimes pressed into sauropod service.
BioLogos, which prefers the name evolutionary creation for what many still call theistic evolution, states the other pole: God created all things, including humans in his image, and “evolution is the best scientific explanation we currently have for the diversity and similarities of all life on Earth.” Non-avian dinosaurs then belong in the Mesozoic dates above. Imago Dei is about calling rather than a shared Day-Six morning. Natural selection is treated as a created process, as photosynthesis is treated as how God grows plants.

The two disagree about chronology, about death before human sin, and about what “literal” requires. They can agree that God creates and that humans bear the image. Young-earth teaching is a real Christian option with churches behind it. It is one option among older interpretive traditions, and the fossil dates stay on the lab’s terms.
Which popular claims overreach?
Calling “God created dinosaurs” and evolutionary history rival scientific hypotheses. Theology answers who and why, in the register of confession. Paleontology answers when and how, in the register of measurement. A radiometric uncertainty of ±0.043 million years on the K–Pg boundary (Renne et al., 2013) is a statement about argon, not about providence. Collapse the registers, and every date feels like unbelief.
Using Behemoth as a dinosaur field ID. Job 40 is not a specimen label. Cedar-like tail language is striking, which is why the sauropod reading spreads. Historical interpretation includes hippopotamus and chaos-monster readings. Scale in Hebrew poetry is not a phylogeny.
Saying science proves or disproves God. Stratigraphy, radiometric dating, and phylogeny test natural-history claims: dinosaurs before humans, five named mass extinctions in the Raup–Sepkoski/Smithsonian framework, birds as the living dinosaur lineage. They do not run a protocol on the existence of God.
“Why did God create dinosaurs and then destroy them” already treats extinction as a divine recall of a failed project. The K–Pg event is one of five mass extinctions in the Smithsonian roster. Purpose is a doctrinal question. The rock records disappearance.
What is the better next question?
Ask which stamp you need. If the question is whether non-avian dinosaurs lived before humans, the published record is aligned: earliest dinosaurs about 243–233 million years ago, K–Pg at 66.00 million years, Homo sapiens about 300,000 years ago. If the question is whether God created, that is doctrine, and Christians have held more than one way of seating that doctrine next to fossils.
The living animals with the closest DNA relationship to dinosaurs are birds. They are avian dinosaurs. Crocodilians are the closest living relatives of that archosaur line among animals that are not themselves dinosaurs, recovered in Green and colleagues’ 2014 Science paper on three crocodilians.
I still think about the beginner I sent out too early. The bag looked complete. One test had not been run. “Did God create dinosaurs” is a bag with two tests. Run both.
