Nest Thermostat vs HVAC Replacement: What Happens If You Go Ahead Anyway

A Nest thermostat cannot replace a furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump. Google Nest Help states that Nest thermostats work with most 24 V systems, even older ones, and that you check compatibility by heating-system type rather than brand. Google's Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) technical specifications require 20–30 VAC from HVAC wiring. The Nest is already installed but the house still will not heat or cool. What should I check first?

After a week of Time-To-Temperature, Google's Nest should estimate how long your plant takes to move the room, then bring on extra stages only when the first stage will not arrive on time. The U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Saver Guide (2022) says you can save as much as 10 percent per year on heating and cooling by turning the thermostat down 7°–10°F for 8 hours a day in fall and winter, and up in spring and summer.
