Can Cats Have Raspberries? What Follows From a Yes and From a No

Yes: a healthy adult cat can have a small amount of washed, plain raspberry as a treat. The USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference Legacy, NDB 09302, Raspberries, raw, lists 52 kcal of energy, 4.42 g of total sugars, and 6.5 g of dietary fiber per 100 g, and a household measure labeled “raspberries” at 19 g that supplies 10 kcal. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association Global Nutrition Committee keeps treats at no more than about 10 percent of a cat’s daily calorie intake, so that 19 g portion already uses 10 of the 22.5 to 25 kcal treat budget on the July 2020 WSAVA chart for a 4 kg (8.8 lb) cat in ideal body condition (225 to 250 kcal/day). A no follows when the raspberry arrives as jam, yogurt, a sugar-free coating, or a stand-in for a complete diet.

I keep those two answers on the same row because a yes without a mass is how I once published a clean-looking error. For fourteen years I maintained conversion tables on a Porto Alegre commodity desk. Crop factors, laboratory nutrient certificates, and edible-yield columns taught me to leave the source value untouched, write the operation next to it, and ask what the denominator represents.

What does the USDA raspberry certificate actually report?

The sheet I use is USDA SR Legacy NDB 09302, the Standard Reference profile FoodData Central still carries. Values are for the edible portion. Per 100 g the laboratory line is 52 kcal, 4.42 g total sugars, and 6.5 g dietary fiber. Water is 85.75 g.

Household measures on that same sheet, which I will not replace with “a couple of berries”:

The 19 g column is the smallest official USDA weight on the raspberry sheet. It is not labeled as one fruit. Field papers put a single Rubus idaeus berry in a few-gram range; USDA does not publish a one-berry line. Serve “one raspberry” without a scale and you have left the certificate.

Energy density is 52 kcal ÷ 100 g = 0.52 kcal per gram. A 19 g measure is 19 × 0.52 = 9.88 kcal, which USDA rounds to 10. I prefer that 10 kcal to any portion that skips the gram.

Fiber is the line people under-read. The 19 g cat treat still carries 1.2 g of dietary fiber, mostly from the seed in each drupelet. Cats do not have a fiber requirement this fruit is meant to fill. I do not convert a 100 g human cup into a cat serving and then call the result small. That is the double conversion I already made once, on a batch total that looked plausible in both units and was wrong in the one that mattered.

How many calories does a cat need, and how large is the treat share?

The denominator for the treat is the cat’s daily energy requirement.

The WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee chart Calorie Needs for an Average Healthy Adult Cat in Ideal Body Condition, updated July 2020, names its reference calculations as the 2006 National Research Council daily maintenance energy requirement for cats: lean adult, 100 kcal × (body weight in kg)^0.67; obese-prone adult, 130 kcal × (body weight in kg)^0.4.

The WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee FAQ Frequently Asked Questions & Myths (January 2018) says dogs and cats can receive treats as long as they make up no more than about 10 percent of the individual’s calorie intake each day.

For the 4 kg cat: daily energy 225 to 250 kcal; treat share at 10 percent = 22.5 to 25 kcal; one USDA 19 g raspberry measure = 10 kcal. Then 10 ÷ 225 = 0.044, or 4.4 percent of daily energy, and 10 ÷ 22.5 = 0.44, or 44 percent of the treat budget. A 123 g cup at 64 kcal is 28 percent of a 225 kcal day. That cup is a human serving.

An AAFCO complete-and-balanced statement on a US cat-food label is what the bowl carries. A raspberry does not. Treat calories displace complete-diet calories.

What follows from a yes?

A yes authorizes a weighed fragment of washed, unsweetened fruit. It does not authorize a handful, a garnish from yogurt, or a second treat that ignores the first.

I follow three operations, in this order.

  1. Wash the raspberry under running water. Pull off any leaf, calyx, or stem. Reject fruit that is moldy, sugared, chocolate-dipped, or sitting in syrup. The USDA 09302 values are for raw edible portion, not for jam.
  2. Weigh it. Stay at or under the USDA 19 g household measure (10 kcal). Check that day’s other extras so the running total stays inside about 10 percent of the WSAVA kcal/day band for your cat’s weight. For a 4 kg cat that band is 22.5 to 25 kcal of treats.
  3. Mash or quarter the fruit. Offer a fragment first. Stop if vomiting, loose stool, or straining shows up in the next hours.

Mashing is the seed step. A raspberry is an aggregate of drupelets, each with a small hard seed. Cats tend to gulp. The 1.2 g of fiber in 19 g is easier as pulp.

Frequency is not on the USDA sheet. A weekly 19 g measure, or less, is a conversion I can defend. A daily cup is not. Kittens, diabetic cats, cats with gastrointestinal disease, and cats on a weight-loss plan sit outside that yes; ask the veterinarian who holds their chart before you add fruit.

What follows from a no?

A no is the more useful kitchen answer, because most raspberry calories in a US house are not the USDA 09302 fruit.

Jam, jelly, pie filling, and syrup add sugar to a fruit that already lists 4.42 g of sugars per 100 g unsweetened. The certificate does not apply once sucrose or glucose syrup goes in. Those products also arrive in spoonfuls, and a spoon is a human unit.

Raspberry yogurt fails on two denominators at once. The fruit mass is no longer 19 g of raspberry; it is a dairy cup with a flavor. Adult cats commonly lose lactase activity. Flavored cups add sugar. Sugar-free cups are the row I refuse without reading: the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine update Paws Off Xylitol; It's Dangerous for Dogs documents xylitol as a canine hypoglycemic toxin and notes that xylitol does not seem as dangerous for cats. Dairy plus an unlabeled sweetener is a product, not NDB 09302.

Grapes and raisins are the comparison that related-search pages keep placing near berries, and they do not belong on this sheet. They are Vitis, not Rubus. ASPCA Poison Control treats grape and raisin ingestions as toxicology cases; a 2022 paper in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, from ASPCA toxicologists, points to tartaric acid as the suspected driver of the canine kidney injury. Documented grape cases in cats are fewer than in dogs. I still keep grapes off the treat list rather than wait for a feline dose curve the literature has not settled.

A no also follows when breakfast already included commercial treats or a dental chew. The 19 g measure is 10 kcal only if it is the extra. The complete diet stays the meal: AAFCO-complete cat food is built for an obligate carnivore, and NRC 2006 is the nutrient-requirement book behind that design. Fruit does not cover taurine or the vitamin A form a cat must get preformed.

How do raspberries compare with strawberries and blackberries for a cat?

Related searches put strawberries and blackberries beside raspberries. The comparison that holds up is form, sugar load, size, and what people add to them. All three numbers below are USDA SR Legacy, edible portion, per 100 g unless a household mass is named.

Raspberry is the highest-energy of the three per 100 g and the lowest in sugar per 100 g. Fiber is doing some of that work: 6.5 g versus 2.0 g in strawberry. For a cat, that fiber is the gastrointestinal risk. Size is the row owners get wrong. A USDA medium strawberry at 12 g is 4 kcal; a USDA raspberry household measure at 19 g is 10 kcal. “One berry” is not a unit that can be compared across these fruits.

Raspberry seeds run through the pulp; strawberry achenes sit on the outside; blackberry keeps a solid core. I mash all three the first time. Jam, yogurt, and sugar-free candy collapse the comparison: the certificate does not follow the fruit into the cup. The 12 g strawberry at 4 kcal spends less of the 22.5 to 25 kcal treat budget than the 19 g raspberry at 10 kcal. ASPCA lists Creeping Rubus (Rubus pedatus) as non-toxic to cats; that is a foliage entry. Commercial red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) is not on the toxic-plant list.

Can cats have raspberry seeds, and can they have raspberry yogurt?

Raspberry seeds are part of the fruit USDA already measured. NDB 09302 does not offer a seedless line. The 6.5 g of dietary fiber per 100 g, and the 1.2 g in the 19 g measure, include those seeds. I have not seen a veterinary toxicology file that treats raspberry seed as a cyanide problem the way apple seed or cherry pit is discussed. The practical issue is mechanical: small hard seeds in a high-fiber pulp, offered to an animal that chews poorly. Mash it.

Raspberry yogurt stays a no even when the cup is labeled low-fat. The denominator is no longer 19 g of fruit. Lactose, added sugars, and possible xylitol in sugar-free lines are the three reasons. Merck Veterinary Manual states that dogs are the domestic species with reported xylitol toxicosis; cats are not at the same risk. That difference does not make the yogurt a cat food.

Mäkinen and Söderling, Journal of Food Science 45 (1980), measured about 400 μg of xylitol per 1.0 g of fresh raspberry. On 19 g that is about 7.6 mg. It is a trace on a fresh-weight certificate, not the dose in sugar-free gum.

Which fruits can a cat eat, and which should stay off the plate?

Raspberry, strawberry, and blackberry sit on the treat list if they stay plain, washed, and weighed. Stay off the plate: grapes and raisins (Vitis; ASPCA Poison Control caseload); cherries with pits; xylitol, chocolate, macadamia; onions and garlic; jams and flavored yogurts. NRC 2006 still describes the cat as an obligate carnivore. Fruit is optional. Write 10 kcal next to 19 g of raspberry, 4 kcal next to 12 g of strawberry, and nothing next to a yogurt cup. The yes is small and weighed. The no is everything that is no longer NDB 09302.
